Huntington Station, New York, 11th April: Video Design Software (VDS) announced today it has fully integrated its Streamliner software application into Discovery Communications’ U.S. broadcast origination systems. Streamliner provides automatic generation of rules-based, relational SCTE104 messages into Discovery’s video signal, which are then received and acted upon by downstream distribution partners for the purposes of Digital Program Insertion and Dynamic Ad Insertion.
The streamliner deployment at Discovery manages SCTE104 messages for 38 channels, including provider and distributor break signaling, blackout programming and chapter start and end for C3. Most of Discovery’s channels previously operated under the control of Colossus, a legacy automation system, and Grass Valley iTX, a current-generation automation system. In order to support evolving rich messaging requirements, Streamliner provided the continuity and scale necessary to integrate these systems and better distribute content to Discovery’s affiliate partners.
This is VDS’s third multichannel deployment at Discovery, adding to its automation-interfaced DiReCT systems in Sterling, VA and Discovery Networks Europe.
Rather than use pre-defined messages with application limits, Streamliner’s dynamic messages are relational to the automation events scheduled for playout. Streamliner’s approach yields a flexible and reliable method that enables precise timing for downstream triggering operations, while supporting sophisticated downstream logic via simple-to-complex SCTE104 messages. It also simplifies the introduction of future message extensions and enhancements, as needs change or more distribution partners are added.
